The great prune debate and the EU.

The high fibre content of prunes has come under the scrutiny of the EU and they have refused to recognise them as a laxative.

This latest bureaucratic paper trail has led to the EU ruling that prunes do not have a laxative effect and producers are unable to say that they do.  I am not sure that this is a bad thing anyway!  Who wants to go up to the local supermarket with a basket full of tinned/dried prunes with the slogan on the packaging saying 'need a laxative? These will get you going!' or words to that effect!

The point is that prunes, dried plums by the way, are high in fibre which contributes to a healthy digestive system. Prunes contain both soluble and insoluble fibre.  It is the insoluble fibre that is needed to help stop constipation as it adds bulk to the diet and helps to 'keep you regular'.  It also makes you feel full up for longer so snacking on dried prunes, for instance, will have no negative effect as they are virtually salt and fat free and the only sugar is naturally occcurring, but they will make you feel full up and may help cut down on all those chocolatey snacks.

So they are cheap, easy to purchase, no harmful side effects and contribute towards a healthy diet. Do you know you can even use them to make sticky toffee pudding? What a combination!  They have got everything going for them even if they don't get you going.

So come on Strasbourg concentrate on what is important to the European Union and the Euro so that hopefully we will still be able to afford to buy the odd packet or tin of prunes.
