Main clauses in a will

These are the main clauses that a legal practitioner would expect to find in a will.

This will vary depending upon the circumstances but will probably follow the pattern set out below:

  •  Name and address of the testator/testatrix;
  •  Date of the will;
  •  Commencement and revocation clause;
  •  Appointment of executors (and trustees);
  •  Appointment of guardians (if appropriate);
  •  Specific and pecuniary gifts(if any);
  •  Alternative provision for bequests to beneficiaries who may pre-decease the testator;
  •  Mirror/Mutual will;
  •  Residuary gift;
  •  Extension of administrative powers etc;
  •  Date and attestation clauses.
