Malicious falsehood

This is an actionable tort sometimes referred to as injurious falsehood.

This amounts to statements questioning a person's title to property whether land or goods.  It now includes personal business interests.

In order for the tort to arise there needs to be a false statement about the claimant.  This statement must be made to a third party and must also be made maliciously and intended to cause the claimant damage or loss.  It is not enough that the statement is made, the claimant must show that they actually suffered loss.
