A queen's counsel is also known as a "silk".

A Queen's Counsel has the right to wear a silk gown in court and this sets him apart from his fellow barristers, hence the alternative name for a QC of a "Silk". The term "taking silk" is sometimes used to describe gaining the award of Queen's Counsel.
