Sine qua non

Sometimes referred to as the 'but for' rule.

Sine Qua Non is a Latin phrase which literally translated means - 'without which,not'. It refers to a vital condition without which an event could not have happened.  Similar in meaning to the 'but for' rule - in other words would something have happened 'but for' an event occurring.
