Summary dismissal is a very serious matter as it brings to an end the contract of employment immediately and as such is ordinarily justified on the grounds of gross misconduct. Gross misconduct is not defined as such so an employer needs to exercise considerable care but some examples of conduct has been held to amount to gross misconduct by the courts e.g. acts of dishonesty, drunkenness and acts of violence.
