Writ

This is an official court document, signed by a judge or bearing an official court seal.  The effect of a writ being to command the person to whom it is addressed and served, to do something specific.

The writ may have the effect of requiring the person to whom the writ is addressed, and who may be a sheriff, to seize property, for example or a defendant in a legal action before the courts.  In the case of a writ in a legal action, this requires the person to answer (defend) the claim made out in the writ or statement of claim or judgement may be made against them by way of default.
