Royal assent

This final stage is now a formality. The Royal Assent Act 1961 recognises that the monarch does not need to read the Bill before her for assent.  The Queen will only need to have a note of the short title.  

The last time a monarch refused to give their assent to a Bill was in 1707.  The monarch at that time was Queen Anne who took exception to the Scottish Militia Bill and refused to give her assent.

This is the final stage where the monarch formally gives approval to the Bill.  It is at this stage that the Bill becomes an Act of Parliament.
